Found an Old Hard Drive with Bitcoin? Start Here

Found an old drive that may contain Bitcoin? Preserve it first, then inspect wallet files, user profiles and backups.

Reviewed:

Windows asks you to format the old drive. You remember using Bitcoin on that computer. Cancel the prompt and pause: preserving the disk comes before searching it.

What to do in the first 15 minutes

  • Do not format or initialize the drive. If Windows offers to format it, cancel.
  • Do not run CHKDSK immediately. File-system repairs can change directory records on a failing disk.
  • Do not install software onto the old drive. New writes can overwrite useful data.
  • Use a trusted adapter and stable power. Intermittent USB connections can make a weak drive worse.
  • Work from a copy when the drive is unstable. If it disconnects, clicks, reports errors, or reads extremely slowly, stop and consider creating a disk image or using a qualified recovery professional.
The goal is not to make the old computer work again. The goal is to preserve and identify the wallet evidence that may still be readable.

Signs the drive may contain Bitcoin evidence

You do not need to remember the exact wallet name. Useful evidence may appear as a Bitcoin Core data folder, a wallet.dat file, an Electrum wallet, an exported private key, a seed phrase note, an exchange receipt, or an old browser profile. Even a public address can help confirm that you were using Bitcoin at the time, although an address alone does not provide access to funds.

Start by identifying the Windows user folders on the old disk. Look under Users, then inspect the old Desktop, Documents, Downloads, and application-data folders. Search copies and backups as well as the original profile; many people manually copied wallet files into folders named backup, old pc, bitcoin, or important.

Files and folders worth checking

  • wallet.dat and folders named Bitcoin or Bitcoin Core
  • Electrum wallet directories and files without obvious extensions
  • JSON keystore files from Ethereum wallets
  • Text documents containing terms such as seed, mnemonic, recovery, private key, passphrase, or backup
  • Old browser profiles that may contain extension-wallet storage
  • ZIP, 7Z, RAR, cloud-sync, and migration folders created when moving to a newer PC

If Bitcoin Core is the strongest lead, use the detailed wallet.dat location guide next. It explains common Windows paths and backup patterns without assuming the old installation still boots.

How to scan the old drive safely

Connect the old disk to a healthy Windows computer and scan the mounted drive or a verified disk-image mount. CryptoTrace's Old drive / folder mode lets you select that target and search locally for wallet files, seed-phrase patterns, private-key patterns, browser-wallet storage, and related artifacts. The scan is read-only and does not upload scan contents or file paths.

A scan result is a lead, not proof of spendable funds. A wallet file may be encrypted. A seed phrase must be complete and in the correct order. A private key should be handled as highly sensitive material. Never paste a discovered seed or key into a website, support chat, or online checker.

If you find something

  1. Make more than one copy of the relevant file before opening or converting it.
  2. Record the original path and surrounding files; nearby configuration or log files may identify the wallet software.
  3. Confirm the wallet family before choosing restoration software.
  4. Use a clean, trusted environment for any recovery attempt involving private keys or seed phrases.
  5. Move recovered funds to a new secure wallet once access is confirmed; do not continue relying on an unknown old environment.

If the first scan finds nothing

No result does not prove there was never a wallet. Check other Windows user profiles, external disks, USB sticks, email attachments, cloud-sync folders, phone backups, and archived home directories. Reconstruct the years when you bought, mined, or received crypto and list every device and backup service you used during that period.

The practical next step

Treat the drive like evidence: preserve it, search methodically, and separate promising artifacts from noise. CryptoTrace can shorten the discovery stage by scanning the old drive locally and organizing likely recovery leads, while you remain in control of every file and every next step.
